GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 5091 Cleeve Abbey in the engine lay by (complete with 55ft turntable) at Swansea High Street on 15 September 1962. This seldom photographed location, constructed in the 1920s, was adjacent to the East side of the station at a lower level, adjacent to the line to Swansea North Dock (closed in November 1965), the line dropping off at the station throat. I suspect it got an increased use when Landore was closed to steam for conversion to a diesel depot and Neath took over its steam allocation. The truncated spur continue to be used until the early 1970s as I personally witnessed locos for future departing trains dissapearing off down this line only to re-appear an hour or so later.

Keith Morris recalls "one the windows on the right belonged to the "Gents" on Platofrm 5- it was always worth looking out of that window to see what was in the stabling yard! "
