5083 1939 Swindon

5083 1939 Swindon

Castle class 4-6-0 No 5083 Bath Abbey inside Swindon shed in 1939.

Peter Kerslake says "An exceptionally fine image of 5083 "Bath Abbey" doubtless obtained by means of a plate glass negative which has produced such a detailed and perectly exposed image from within the dark confines of Swindon Running Shed.
The engine is in pristine condition and clearly just fresh from an overhaul at the adjacent Works with the original design of inside valve chest casing with its rounded top face clear to see.
Having originally entered service in November of 1922 as "Star" class 4063, and named "Bath Abbey", the locomotive was the first of the ten members of the "Abbey" batch of "Stars" to be rebuilt as "Castles" from June of 1937, the engine retaining its original name, but renumbered 5083, so it would be in its second year as a "Castle" in this fine view.
Allocated as a new "Star" to Newton Abbot in November of 1922 "Bath Abbey" was in later years destined to see service from Swindon before ending her days at Worcester M.P.D. in January of 1959."
