5086 1958-03-06 Cardiff Canton

GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 5086 Viscount Horne, a visitor from Gloucester Horton Road, at Canton shed on 6 March 1958. The extended coal shute was put in during WW2 to add additional capacity - this extension to a further road was unique to Canton on the GWR.

Peter Kerslake says "Starting its life as "Star" 4066 "Malvern Abbey", built in December 1922 and allocated to Wolverhampton from new this engine became "Sir Robert Horne" in May of 1935 and then "Viscount Horne" in August 1937.
The third of the ten "Stars" rebuilt as "Castles" and now 5086 this engine looks as though it's recently been through Swindon Works, this is a Worcester engine with a 85A shedplate, not a Gloucester one as Worcester "Castles" were certainly better cared for than were those at Gloucester.
After spending time at Worcester 5086 was condemned from there just eight months after this fine photograph".
