7027 1956-05-27 Box

Castle 4-6-0 No 7027 Thornbury Castle leaves Box tunnel with a Paddington to Bristol express on May 27, 1956.

Peter Kerslake says "Allocated to Old Oak Common at the date of this fine view, 7027 "Thornbury Castle" heads away from Box Tunnel, bound for Bristol Temple Meads on a working from Paddington on the 27th May 1956.
Originally a Plymouth engine at Laira, 7027 went to Old Oak Common in March of 1959 remaining there until May of 1960 when she went to Worcester, and then to Reading in August of 1963.
"Thornbury Castle" has had a chequered history since being withdrawn in December of 1963, being rescued from Woodhams' scrap yard at Barry, leaving there in August of 1972 having been sold to the Birmingham Railway Museum.
No restoration was carried out and "Thornbury Castle" then found herself down at the Dart Valley Railway at Buckfastleigh from April of 1989 until March 1992.
Later years took 7027 into store at Crewe and thereafter to Peak Rail Heritage Centre at Rowsley in April of 2016.
A recent development, however, has seen 7027 purchased by Bristol based businessman Johnathan Jones-Pratt who has now moved 7027 from his engineering premises at Weston super Mare down to Bishop's Lydeard on the heritage West Somerset line where restoration is planned."
