7006 1959-07-21 Saltash
Castle 4-6-0 No 7006 Lydford Castle passes slowly through Saltash station before crossing the Royal Albert Bridge with the up 'Cornish Riviera Express' on 21st July 1959.
Peter Kerslake says "A Gloucester Horton Road engine in the early 'fifties 7006 "Lydford Castle" came down to Plymouth's Laira Depot in April of 1959, and she is seen here heading back home from Penzance passing through the last station in Cornwall at Saltash with Mr. Brunel's bridge just ahead.
This would be a return working for this engine which probably worked down from Plymouth to Penzance, possibly on the down "Riviera" the previous day, and 7006 will come off this working at Plymouth North Road where the customary "King" will already be waiting to work the " Cornish Riviera " forward and non stop to Paddington
Sadly the fine Chapel rising behind the station was destroyed in an arson attack, and following a decline of local passenger and commuter services to and from Plymouth in particular upon the opening of the Tamar road bridge the main buldings at Saltash station on the right were boarded up, the whole area being badly neglected for many years but recently announced plans for a restoration have been widely welcomed.
A second spell at Gloucester in 1960 preceded a move for 7006 to Worcester and then in 1962 the engine went to Old Oak Common from where she was withdrawn in December of 1963."
