5098 1951 Uphill Junction

5098 1951 Uphill Junction

Castle class 4-6-0 No 5098 Clifford Castle, with early BR lettering on its Hawksworth tender, at Uphill Junction with an afternoon Taunton to Bristol express in 1951.

Peter Kerslake says "5098 "Clifford Castle" is a Laira engine and I strongly suggest that this service is not just from Taunton but from Plymouth, possibly a Sunday working, running past Uphill Junction where the line to Weston super Mare diverges away from the more direct line to Bristol Temple Meads.
How far "Clifford Castle" is heading is uncertain as she may be running just to Bristol but if this a Paddington bound duty she could well be heading all the way to London as sufficient coal would have been taken at Laira for such runs to Paddington "the long way round" via Bristol, and there were water troughs on the way as well as station watering facilities.
There appear to be a mixture of vans at the tail of this rather mixed formation.
After later spells of duty at Newton Abbot, Carmarthen, Llanelly and Old Oak 5098 was finally condemned fom Reading in June of 1964."
