5087 1960s Sonning Cutting
GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 5087 Tintern Abbey in Sonning Cutting in the 1960s.
Peter Kerslake says "A classic Sonning Cuttings image, to the east of Reading, with 5087 "Tintern Abbey", allocated to Llanelly from December of 1961 until withdrawal in August of 1963, headiing westwards, doubtless to Wales, on the down fast line .
5087 was rebuilt in November 1940 to a "Castle" from the January 1923 built "Star" 4067 with the same name and this location was a favourite vantage point for the late and renowned photographer Maurice Earley for whom a wooded platform was erected by the authorities in order to aid his efforts!"
