4075 1930 Powderham
GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 4075 Cardiff Castle with the down 'Torquay Pullman' near Powderham in 1930.
This was the short-lived 'Torquay Pullman', the only one on the GWR, which ran between Paddington and Paignton. It ran on Mondays and Fridays, departing Paddington at 11.00 and was booked to run non-stop to Newton Abbot in 205 minutes. The train wasn't a success which, despite its undoubted luxury, was more expensive and slightly slower than the conventional service. All Pullman cars were withdrawn from GWR routes from September 1930.
Peter Kerslake adds "Powderham is just to the west of Exeter and before the sea wall stretch at Dawlish and Teignmouth."
