GWR Castle class 4-6-0 No 5024 Carew Castle passes Sprey Point with the down 'Cornishman' on September 2, 1958.
This shot has been taken between Parsons Tunnel and Sprey Point which is the border of Holcombe Dawlish and Teignmouth. Therefore the location should be shown as Holcombe Dawlish

Peter Kerslake says "Note the mass of rocks enlarged over the years in order to afford protection of this vital line from the ravages of the sea in storm conditions, but also affording protection of a very different nature is the little "Pill Box" buiilt into the rock face and visible here to the seaward side of the tunnel mouth, used to house observers on duty during the last war on the look out for any enemy vessels close to the shore and its line.
There were other such posts on the cliffs above the line, with one also on the approach to Teignmouth station
Running between Wolverhampton and Penzance the southbound "Cornishman" engine has probably worked from Bristol and could well work through to Penzance, but these duties were always somewhat of a mystery to me so 5024 may have come from Wolverhampton, running just as far as Newton Abbot but there was certainly no engine change at Pymouth!"
