7000 1950s Kingswear

7000 1950s Kingswear

GWR Castle class 4-6-0 No 7000 Viscount Portal with an express approaching the terminus at Kingswear.

Peter Kerslake says " An express in name but just three coaches which will doubtless have been detached at Newton Abbot from the tail end of a working heading further westwards down to Plymouth and possibly into Cornwall.
With the River Dart alongside 7000 is approaching Kingswear, the engine allocated from newly built to Newton Abbot and one of 13 "Castles" there in the mid 'fifties but sent to Cardiff for just four months in 1957 before returning to Newton Abbot and later heading to Gloucester in June of 1959 and then finally to Worcester in February of 1963 from where it was withdrawn in the December.
Whilst at Newton Abbot "Viscount Portal" was a favourite for the "Torbay Express" a duty running between Kingswear and Paddington and shared between Newton Abbot and Old Oak Common depots , almost always "Castle" hauled. "
