5075 1958-06-26 Totnes

GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 5075 Wellington with the down Royal Duchy beyond Totnes on 26 June 1958.

Peter Kerslake says " 5075 "Wellington" is tackling the lower slopes of Rattery bank just after passing Totnes n the down "Royal Duchy" which it will work from Paddington to Plymouth from where a fresh engine will take the modest seven coach load onwards to Penzance.
Built in August of 1938 and named "Devizes Castle" 5075 was initially housed at Wolverhampton and renamed in October of 1940, being moved to Chester, Laira, Exeter, Neath and Cardiff Canton and finally to Bristol from where it was condemned in September of 1962 .
The gradient here is a one in 66 but steepening to one in 46 for a modest stretch just before its top at Tigley"
