GWR Castle 4-6-0 No 5045 Earl of Dudley on a down slow leaving Parsons tunnel near Teignmouth on 5 June 1949.

Peter Kerslake says " Although it's the year after Nationalisation 5045 still has its buffer beam number and is without a smokebox door number plate, the engine having been built in March 1936 as "Bridgwater Castle", renamed in September of 1937 and allocated from new to Old Oak Common where it was still housed at the date of this view, later moving to Wolverhampton from where it was condemned in September of 1962.
The wartime "Pill Box" observation post, manned in the war time years to provide early warning of enemy vessels too close for comfort is visible on the face of the cliff above the protective rocks, just one of a number protecting this vital stretch of line."
