69796 1953-04-11 Darlington

Since August 1951, A6 4-6-2T No 69796 was the sole surviving ‘Whitby Willie’, but in April 1953 its time had finally run out and it was dispatched from Hull to Darlington for scrapping. It is at the North Rd yard, hemmed in on both sides no photograph was possible which showed this to be an inside cylinder engine (originally built, in 1908, as a 4-6-0T). These engines were few in number -ten in all, and rarely photographed.
