Scarborough Falsgrave is where the North Eastern Railway's lines to Whitby and beyond diverged from the main lines heading into the terminus station. The NER 'W1' class of ten 4-6-2 Tanks had been designed for working this difficult and undulating route, but as originally built in 1907-8 they had been a 'W' class 4-6-0 Tank. Their water and coal capacity was insufficient and a hasty but succesful rebuild to 4-6-2 Tanks was undertaken. As such, and now class 'W1' (LNER 'A6') they survived into the early BR era. Here is an unidentified class member circa 1923 at the mouth of the short Falsgrave Tunnel, just out of view to the right.
