Slough Station, junction for Windsor (Central), and the Up 'Red Dragon'
View westward, towards Reading and the West. Instead of the usual GW 'Castle', the 'Red Dragon' (7.30am Carmarthen - Paddington) was worked for a few years by one of the 15 BR Britannia Pacifics tolerated by the Western Region, here No. 70029 'Shooting Star'. On the right can be glimpsed one of the numerous 61XX 2-6-2Ts that domionated the local services from Paddington, possibly here either on a parcels working or working from Windsor.
Peter Kerslake adds "The last of the five " Britannias " sent to Cardiff Canton from being newly built , 70029 " Shooting Star " began service there in November of 1952 and would have been a regular performer on the tightly timed Top Link workings such as this , the " Red Dragon " in company with her four sisters , all of which were welcomed by the Canton footplatemen .
Working from Cardiff to Paddington on an " Out and Back " roster , and with sufficient coal provided by Canton before the outward run , the " Britannias " would only need to be turned , oiled and watered at Paddington's Ranelagh Yard before running back home again as far as Cardiff later the same day .
Following a month helping out on the Southern Region at Exeter's Exmouth Junction Depot in May of 1953 " Shooting Star " was returned to Canton , remaining there until her transfer to Birmingham's Aston Depot in September of 1961."
