Birmingham New Street Station, east end, with 'Britannia' Pacific:
View northward across to main ex-LNW Up platform 3. BR 'Britannia' 7MT 4-6-2 No. 70005 'John Milton' (built 4/51, withdrawn 7/67) is on the 10.5am express from Glasgow Central. The locomotive is sparkling, probably fresh from repair at Crewe Works as it was one of those working then on the ER (GE Section). Note the temporary platform canopy, which was a feature of the LNW section of the station, substituting for the great overall roof after war damage, until the Station was rebuilt in the 1960s.
Peter Kerslake says "Understandably 70005 " John Milton " is attracting a great deal of attention from the enthusiasts on the platform here at Birmingham New Street as this Stratford shedded " Britannia " is a long way from her Eastern Region home ground and her usual workings between Liverpool Street and Norwich.
Undoubtably the explanation is that " John Milton " , as correctly shown in your earlier comments , is undergoing runs from Crewe after overhaul and before being sent back home to Stratford.
70005 was later transferred away from Stratford in January of 1959 when with staffing problems at Stratford it was decided to concentrate the Eastern Region " Britannias " at Norwich , thereby adding to those already there .
A later move to March , a Depot primarily used for freight locomotives , in September of 1961 was a badly thought out decision and resulted in the majority of the former Norwich " Britannias " sent there being stored out of use before being transferred to the Midland Region in late 1963.
