70029 1967-10-01 Ribblehead-ROS-1706-112

The last months of steam workings over Shap Fell have brought out the enthusiasts despite the poor visibility and the fellow in the foreground has his trousers tucked up so it's either wet underfoot or he's got here by bicycle as 70029 " Shooting Star " slogs up the gradient , doubtless with a banking engine assisting at the rear .
The last of the five " Britannias " delivered as new engines to Cardiff Canton in November of 1952 "Shooting Star " and her four sisters were warmly received by the shedmasters and footplate crews at Canton , putting in some fine perfomances on the express passenger workings between Cardiff and Paddington .
70029 was transferred away to the London Midland Region in September of 1961 as the " Hymek " Diesels took over the South Wales workings , being allocated firstly to Aston and then to Carlisle's Kingmoor and Upperby Depots , being withdrawn from Kingmoor in October , 1967 , the same month as this view.
