70040 1967-03-01 Winwick-ROneg-1406-630

A splendid high vantage portrayal of 70040 " Clive of India " with a fast fitted freight and express parcels working here at Winwick , near Warrington , at the time when the engine was allocated to her final shed at Carlisle Kingmoor from where she was withdrawn just a month after this view.
One of the first three former Norwich based " Britannias " to go to Immingham in December of 1960 this engine , together with its sisters , had been warmly received by the Immingham footplate crews , and the eventual total of seven " Britannias " there were soon rostered to accelerated passenger duties between Cleethorpes , Grimsby and Kings Cross
The "magnificent seven" were 70035-41

Peter Kerslake says "70040 " Clive of India " has an express parcels rake in her charge here at Winwick Junction in March of 1967, and one of the nice aspects of such workings is that they provided the cameraman with a splendid variety of stock as shown here .
Allocated from new in March of 1953 to Norwich , thereafter to Stratford and then back again to Norwich in January of 1959 " Clive of India " was one of the three " Britannias " despatched from Norwich to Immingham in December of 1960 when Diesel power displaced them from the former Great Eastern main line between Liverpool Street and Norwich , being joined later in 1961 at Immingham by four others rescued from the many lying idle at that time at March depot in Cambridgeshire .
Transferred to Carlisle Upperby in December of 1963 " Clive of India " was finally withdrawn from Carlisle Kingmoor in April of 1967 so this view has her with just a month left in service . "
