1338 1961-07-09 Swansea East Dock

Stopped for boiler inspection chalked on cab sideThis view of 1338 at Swansea East Dock from 9th. July of 1961 shows the little saddle tank back in Wales as following many earlier years allocated to Taunton 1338 was reallocated in the early 'sixties to Swansea Docks, remaining there until withdrawal in 1963. The engine had begun her working life in 1898 as number 5 at Cardiff Docks, becoming 1338 with its new owners upon grouping but was put into store at Cardiff East Dock by the G.W.R. in 1932 before spending time down at Taunton shed and working in the nearby Bridgwater Docks. Withdrawn from here at Swansea Docks in 1963 the engine was privately purchased, to spend 22 years on static display in the open at Bleadon and Uphill station near Weston super Mare before a move to Didcot in 1987, and a full restoration by the Great Western Society at their Didcot base. The BR nameplate is something of a mystery !
