2507 1938-08-04 Edinburgh Haymarket MPD

LNER Gresley 'A3' class 4-6-2 No. 2507 'Singapore'. Built at Doncaster in December 1934 and withdrawn in July 1964 as BR No. 60042.

Although the delightful names bestowed on the A3s was an inspired idea, most of the traveling public probably didn't know that winning racehorses were the inspiration! Seeing a locomotive named 'Pretty Polly', 'Harvester' or as seen here at Haymarket in August 1938 'Singapore', the average traveler was perhaps bound to draw the wrong conclusions. There are other (more ribald) possibilities amongst the A3 names!
