60110 1958-04-26 Peterborough North
A London-bound stopping service coasts into Peterborough Station on 26th April 1958 with A3 No 60110 ‘Robert the Devil’ in charge. Commemmorating the winner of the 1880 St Leger there was a rumour that this locomtive’s name, applied in May 1925, had more than a passing connection with a certain foreman at Doncaster Plant whose first name was Robert. Certainly the name was an early choice as this was one of the first two A1s to be named after a racehorse. Fitting of a double chimney came in May 1959 but four years later in May 1963 No 60110 was withdrawn from service, just 2 months short of its 40th year. The platform-situated lower quadrant down home signal was soon to be replaced with an upper quadrant variant. In due course, all the semaphores seen in this picture would be swept away and replaced by colour lights. This locomotive was unique amongst the A1/A3s in having the same tender throughout its career.
