Down Newcastle

With the introduction by Sir Nigel Gresley in April 1928 of his unique Corridor Tenders to his highly acclaimed class " A1" express passenger design the way was paved for non stop runs between Kings Cross and Edinburgh , and this engine , then numbered 4476 , " Royal Lancer " , the fifth built in 1923 , together with 4472 " Flying Scotsman " were the first two to be selected to have the new tenders.
Consequentially , on the 1st .May 1928 , whilst " Flying Scotsman " headed the inaugral Non stop " Flying Scotsman " northwards from Kings Cross amidst a blaze of Press publicity " Royal Lancer " was on the southbound working from Edinburgh's Waverley that same day .
In this much later image , " Royal Lancer " has the German style smoke deflectors in place, and they seem to be doing their job well !
