47981 1950s Derby

LMS Garratt 2-6-0+0-6-2 No 47981 approaching Derby South Junction in c1955. Derby South Junction was actually to the north of the station where the avoiding lines split to go north or south to meet the main line. It is signalled to take the line north in c1955.
The two spires in the background belonged to St. Alkmond’s church (the needle spire) and Derby cathedral.
