On the R.P.P.R. 'Toffeeapple Farewell' Railtour to Portishead and the Avonmouth dock branch. Note the very narrow platform at Clifton Bridge.
Mr. Brunel's masterpiece is highlighted by the sunshine in this fine view from the Portishead branch here at Clifton Bridge Halt .
During its heyday the line from Temple Meads via Ashton Gate to Portishead was well patonised , with Portishead having a new station in January of 1954 as the town developed .
The line was worked frequently during the days of ssteam by class 4500 and 5500 tank engines in addition to being a regular run for St . Philips Marsh allocated former GWR Railcars , but passenger services ended in early September , 1964 .
In happier times there had been some fourteen daily passenger trains working the line on weekdays to and from Temple Meads with additional excursions to Portishead during the Summer months
Following the cessation of passenger services the line has remained a vital freight link for the extended freight facilities at Portbury Dock , with hopes of a return to passenger services still persisting
With Mr . Brunel's splendid masterpiece in the background this returning special working is heading back to Bristol from Portishead near the former site of the largest station on the branch line , namely Clifton Bridge .
Sadly , the fine station buildings at this location were demolished when passenger services to and from Portishead ended in 1964 although the line still remains as a freight only link between the expanding and popular Portishead and the ever expanding Bristol .
The line to Portishead owes its being to Brunel's plans for a small freight port there as the Avon , with its narrow bends and massive tidal flow had been a major obstacle for large merchant ships , and much later additions provided rail links from the branch to the major freight centres within the Bristol Docks complex .
Large power stations at Portishead also contributed to the line's importance in later years
