D8204 1962-09-08 near Clapham Junction

Class 15 No D8204 between Longhedge and Clapham Junctions with a transfer freight to Temple Mills on September 8, 1962.

David J Hayes says "A very nice period capture of a cross-London transfer freight, which I'm guessing has originated from Hither Green. The service has just passed Wandsworth Road and is now on the non-electrified lines leading to Latchmere Junction and the busy West London Line axis, which was traversed by a wonderful variety of freight services, including trains dealing with international commodities to and from Europe via the Dover train-ferries.

The electrified lines on the right lead to/from the Windsor line platforms at Clapham Junction and were traversed by such freights as MGR coal trains from Welbeck to Northfleet Cement Works (opened in 1970), cement trains from Northfleet to such destinations as Birmingham (Handsworth) and Dunstable, and by various coal trains from the Kent coalfield to Cricklewood and beyond (including to coking plants and steelworks in the north) and from the Midlands to Southfleet (opened by APCM in the late 1960s to handle coal for the cement industry) amongst many other workings".
