7803 1956-06-13 Welshpool

7803 , " Barcote Manor " had been one of Machynlleth's pair of " Manors " from an early date in 1947 , working the Cambrian lines in conjunction with three of the class from Oswestry and one at Wrexham , with 7808 " Cookham Manor " having been the very first of the three at Oswestry to be rostered on those services from 1943 .
Originally destined for cross country services from the North of England to Wales , and working such rosters between Banbury and Swansea , the " Manors " became widely associated in later years with the Cambrian lines , replacing the little " Dukedogs " in the early ' fifties and being joined by other members of their class , ousted from the pilot duties on the South Devon banks between Plymouth and Newton Abbot in the late ' fifties.
With effect fom July of 1956 Swindon turned out the " Manors " fresh from overhaul in lined green livery with 7828 " Odney Manor " being the first to return to traffic in its new colours , the last so treated in 1960 being 7819 " Hinton Manor " .

This view is at the western or Barmouth side of Welshpool station and 7803 is taking water before heading down into Cambrian territory , doubtless bound for Aberystwyth , with the water tower supplying this water column prominent in the background and the main station buildings out of shot on the Shrewsbury platform on the extreme left.
7803 " Barcote Manor " was one of three of her class allocated to Machynlleth and its sub Depot at Aberystwyth at the date of this view , invariably well turned out by the staff at those Depots especially when booked to work the " Cambrian Coast Express " as she often did , but sadly not being one of the nine making it into preservation
