45403 1963 Tyldesley
Dennis Sweeney has done some research on this previously unidentified shotThis is Tyldesley. Train is on down line, line on right split into Platform 4 road and down loop. line on left to Platform 1. Jim would be up the signal ladder to take this shot. Tyldesley goods yard and warehouse and wagon repair shop on left. The colliery on the horizon is Mosley Common, biggest in Lancashire, still in operation when this shot was taken mid 1960s. Might be able to give a more accurate date when I receive print. Colliery on far right is Astley Green. Signal box visible, left of centre is Hough Lane. Incidentally, this route from Leigh to Ellenbrook is now a guided busway as from April 2016. Highly controversial; overwhelmingly, the public wanted the railway reinstated. The date of this photo is 1963 and must be shortly after Tyldesley No.1 & 2 boxes were removed to be replaced by a BR Type 15 built on the former cattle dock turntable. Box No 1 was sited on this side of the signals seen in shot, the distant & calling-on arms being removed. Some time the same year, or early 1964 house building would commence in the field, upper right. As these are absent it confirms the date.
