78002 1957c Pwllheli

On the 5.25pm to Barmouth, the starter signal is still of Cambrian Railway origin. The terminus at Pwllheli and end of the line on the Cambrian with Standard 78002 about to set off southwards towards Barmouth. The station had an island platform with an imposing canopy and some limited facility for holding empty stock on the left. Standard 78002 had come to Machynlleth in 1953 at the time when former GWR locomotives were nearing the end of their days. The Standards were received favourably by the footplate crews who welcomed their enclosed cabs and high tender fronts which afforded protection from the harsh Welsh winter weather especially when running tender first . There was a locomotive depot, one of Machynlleth's four sub sheds, situated on the approach to the station. It had a new building provided in 1959 to replace the original wooden Cambrian Railways structure.
