78000 1957c Barmouth

This fine view shows clearly how the fine buildings of the town of Barmouth was built into the adjoining hillside , with the waters of Barmouth Bay just visible in the gap between the buildings in the background . Standard 78000 , the first of her class , is heading towards Barmouth Bridge , probably having worked from the end of the line at Pwllheli and is doubtless heading for Dovey Junction , twenty two miles away with Barmouth being the most important station on the fifty four mile stretch between Pwllheli and Dovey Junction . The Standards came to the Cambrian system in 1953 and they found favour with the footplatemen who liked their tenders which afforded substantial protection on the footplate from the elements , especially when running tender first during the Winter months.
