It had been heading the 6.25pm Up Postal from Glasgow to Euston when it hit the rear of the 5.40pm Glasgow to Euston express, which had been stopped in open country in the middle of the night after a soldier 'On Leave' had pulled the communication cord to get home across the fields and the express had been wrongly reported 'out of section' by the Winsford signalman.
