No 46236 City of Bradford approaches Paddington with the 1.44pm arrival from Plymouth on May 21, 1948 during the British Railways' Locomotive Interchange Trials.
Peter Kerslake says "46236 City of Bradford represented the Coronations in the express passenger category of the 1948 Locomotive Interchange Trials and worked on the Southern, Western and Eastern Regions and this picture is of the 8.30a.m. departure from Plymouth.
City of Bradford performed well especially when on the Western Region tackling the banks between Newton Abbot and Plymouth in both directions, but very nearly came to grief when on the Eastern Region. Manned by a former L.M.S. driver, 46236 went through the 20 m.p.h. speed restriction at the northern approach to Peterborough North station at almost 60 m.p.h. due to the driver misunderstanding an instruction to reduce speed given to him by the ex L.N.E.R. driver riding on the footplate, but thankfully the train came to no harm."
