6231 1939 near Boxmoor

LMS Coronation 4-6-2 No 6231 Duchess of Atholl with the down 'Mid-day Scot' near Boxmoor in 1939.
Peter Kerslake says "6231 heralded the fitting of smoke deflectors to the class as six years after this photograph this engine was involved in a serious accident at Ecclefechan, south of Lockerbie when on 21st July 1945 when heading a Glasgow to Euston passenger express it collided with a freight. With both footplatemen sadly losing their lives the cause of the express overrunning signals set at danger was never fully established, but this event together with later reports of restricted vision forward from the footplate resulted in smoke deflectors being fitted to the class."
