6230 1946 Crewe Works

6230 1946 Crewe Works

6230 Duchess of Buccleuch at Crewe Works in September 1946 after a Heavy Service repair during which it was fitted with smoke deflectors but retained its pre-war crimson lake livery. It had been patch painted and its cab numbers have been moved to immediately below the windows, possibly before this date. 6230 was not finally repainted until shortly after nationalisation, when it received LMS 1946 lined black with an ‘M’-prefix added to its number. This lasted only three months because 6230 was repainted again in May 1948 in British Railways experimental dark blue livery.
