Colin Ryder adds all the details -
46233 is approaching Salterwath Cottages with an up freight on the descent of Shap.

Beyond the cottages can be seen at green the 2-aspect signal on a black & white post, the standard paint pattern for LMS tubular isolated distant signals (originally applied between 1939 and 1946). This is the distant for the home at Scout Green Crossing (see photo for 45742 for more information).
Also visible is the top of the down distant for the intermediate block signal at Shap Wells (see photo for 44734 for more information).

This pair of stone cottages, just like the pair further south down the incline at Lowmoor, were according to Harold Bowtell ‘an early pair, and in the early 20th century were occupied by pw staff. Coal was sent in two wagons, one for each site, twice a year from the Tebay coal agent to engineering department order, and shovelled out at each location.’ [1]

That esteemed photographer Derek Cross also favoured this spot at Salterwath. He had an interesting story about one of the gangers living in one of the cottages in the 1950s who “had the distinction of keeping a pet fox. The neighbouring farmers took rather a dim view of this beast, though it was a friendly animal and on one occasion took a very kindly view of my picnic lunch” [2]
