46232 1948c Carstairs
Six Coronations were given an experimental dark blue livery with LNWR style lining in May 1948. They were to be used with two sets of coaches repainted for the “Royal Scot” service, one in ‘plum and split milk’ and the other ‘chocolate and cream’, as the newly nationalised British Railways tried out various livery combinations on some of its principal express services. Polmadie’s 46232 Duchess of Montrose, on a southbound train at Carstairs, kept the dark blue until November 1951 when it became the first of the class to be repainted in the new British Railways standard reen.
