Spotter's heaven at Carlisle - there's even a girl number-taker!
The Hornby-Dublo favourite 46232 leaves its train for sister 46234 to take over- now what happened to 46233? 46211 is blowing off as it waits to depart.

Peter Kerslake says "46232 "Duchess of Montrose" was sadly destined to be one of the first three of her class to be condemned in December of 1962, the year after this stirring image from Carlisle, sharing that dubious honour with 46227 "Duchess of Devonshire" and 46231 "Duchess of Atholl", whilst sister engine seen here namely 46234 "Duchess of Abercorn" soldiered on until the following month when it too ended its days in January of 1963.
The beginning of the 'sixties saw the breakdown of the former major allocation of "Duchesses" from their former depots at Polmadie, Crewe North, Carlisle Upperby and Camden with a number of the class going to Liverpool's Edge Hill, Carlisle Kingmoor and later in 1962 to Willesden as Camden became a Diesel Depot, but within a year or so all the class had gone from service with 46256 "Sir William A. Stanier FRS" being the last to survive until October of 1964."
