Not the usual clear and sunny scene here at Winwick Junction as 46224 " Princess Alexandra " storms through with her smoke deflectors doing just what they were intended for and lifting her exhaust well clear of the cabside windows.
This particular member of the class had an unhappy history of suffering two boiler explosions in past years , the first being whilst in the hands of an inexperienced footplate crew in September of 1940 , and again eight years later , with fatalities arising from both accidents .
A Polmadie engine for the whole of her working life , 46224 was withdrawn from there in October of 1963
