46221 1962 near Lichfield

46221 Queen Elizabeth was the only Coronation to run with riveted, part-welded and welded tenders. Until November 1961 it retained its original de-streamlined fully-welded example but was then given a part-welded tender from 46253 before it was finally paired with the riveted tender from Princess Royal 46206 in October 1962. This final exchange was because 46206’s tender, which was the only one with a coal pusher coupled to a Princess Royal, was in better condition and 46206 was about to be withdrawn. Pictured at Netherstowe Lane, on the northern outskirts of Lichfield, heading the Down “Red Rose” from Euston to Liverpool in 1962, 46221 is in green livery with post-1956 BR crests on the part-welded tender and overhead warning flashes. Its AWS had been fitted in October 1959 and the cylinder bye-pass valves had been removed;
