52446 has been renumbered using the short-lived BR 1948 BLOCK style of numerals favoured by Crewe and Horwich works in 1948 before the introduction of the Gill Sans font.

The smoke-box numberplate also appears to be in the similar-looking bold sans serif style that was cast only for a short period of time.

In later BR days, 52446 was a Bolton (26C) loco until withdrawal in July 1951
