52289 1956-03 Wigan L&YR shed
Sir John Aspinall continued the good work in updating the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's locomotive fleet that had been begun by his predecessor, William Barton Wright. These were simple, sturdy and economical machines that performed their duties for more than 60 years in many cases. Here at Wigan L&YR shed in March 1956, is ex-L&YR 27' (LMS '3F') class No. 52289, just one of the 484 in this numerous class. 52289 was built at Horwich in July 1895 as L&YR No. 1280 and was withdrawn in Oct. 1959.
