The first engine shed at Malton was built in 1853 and extended in 1867; it had a sub-shed at Pickering. At its peak in the 1930s it had 18 engines on its books but the number by this date was around a dozen. It had code 50F under British Railways and closed in April 1963. This 1958 picture has examples of three of the four classes allocated there at that time. In the shed is a ‘J39’ 0-6-0 and outside on the left ‘A8’ 4-6-2T 69861 which was allocated there from June 1956 until withdrawn four years later; on the right is ‘G5’ 0-4-4T 67342 which had arrived from Sunderland in March 1958 but was withdrawn at the end of the year.
