The North Eastern Railway was one of few British companies to build locomotives with a 4-4-4 wheel arrangement. Sir Vincent Raven's 'H1' class tanks were built as such, however adhesion problems caused them to be rebuilt by Gresley as 4-6-2s in LNER days. Their new class was designated 'A8' and by 1936 all 45 locomotives had been thus modified. In September 1955 No. 69882 at the ex-NER MPD at Neville Hill in Leeds. The old wooden coaling stage is seen behind to the right. 69882 was built (as NER class H1 No. 1503) in July 1921, rebuilt to LNER class A8 in February 1936 and withdrawn in Nov. 1958
