Ex-South Eastern & Chatham Railway Wainwright 'D' class 4-4-0 No. 31501. Built by Dubs & Co. of Glasgow in Mar. 1903 as SE&CR No. 501. and withdrawn in March 1953 but retained as a stationary boiler until 1959. A dishonorable fate has befallen poor old 31501 seen at Ramsgate MPD in March 1957. The SE&CR 'Ds' had the typical flowing curves and symmetry of Wainwright's best designs. They were excellent machines originally finished in the sumptuous and glorious SE&CR livery. We are indeed fortunate that classmate 1737 is restored in this condition at the NRM. Oh to see it in steam!
