40108 1950s Birmingham New Street

40108 1950s Birmingham New Street

One of the New Street station pilots which succeeded the LNWR ‘Coal Tanks’, Stanier ‘2MT’ 2-6-2T No.40108 shunting a GWR diagram DC4 Cordon gas tank wagon into the parcels bay. The class was by some distance the least successful of Stanier’s designs for the London Midland & Scottish Railway. No.40108 was allocated to Monument Lane shed from June 1954 until late 1960. Ed Purcell remembers that this loco was a bit of a 'sore thumb' in the area and never seemed to get any serious work to do.
