40135 45556 1961-09-02 Nuneaton
A nice shot of Nuneaton shed on 2nd September 1961 showing the variety of LMS classes which could be found there at this date - unidentified engines in this picture include two Stanier ‘8F’ 2-8-0s, an Ivatt ‘4MT’ 2-6-0 and a Stanier 2-6-0. The Stanier 2-6-2T on the left, No.40135, was a local engine in its second spell at the shed after four years away at Birkenhead Mollington Street. The ‘Jubilee’ on the right is No.45556 Nova Scotia, a Crewe North engine from 1954 until withdrawn in 1964. Out of view of the camera on the right of the shed were the coaling plant, ash plant and turntable. The shed had gained extra duties from the former Midland Railway shed at nearby Stockingford when in 1932 the LMS concentrated all locomotives at the former LNWR shed shown here. Wartime congestion was so severe at the shed yard that in 1944 the LMS constructed a new access to the shed from the Leicester loop line, dipping under the LNWR main line and direct onto the turntable.
