The ex-Caledonian Railway '782' (LMS '3F') class were designed by John McIntosh and no less than 138 were built between 1896-1913. Stovepipe chimneys and the more shapely Drummond replacements were one of very few variants of this excellent, long-lasting class that became extinct by 1962. This fine study of 56279 in ex-works condition, was taken at St. Rollox MPD in June 1955 prior to the locomotive's return to Ardrossan (67D).
