1020 1963-08-13 Bristol St Philips Marsh
Working with a flare lamp for light. There is a glimpse of the fitters shop. For some reason 1020 was a camera shy member of the class. An interesting view of 1020 " County of Monmouth " under repair at Bristol St . Philip's Marsh Depot amid the general clutter so familiar in those days , including , rather unusually a couple of bicycles for good measure and this particular " County " had spent her years allocated to Neyland so that could well account for her being rather elusive .St. Philip's Marsh , the principal Bristol Motive Power Depot for Western freight locomotives , with its two Roundhouses , opened in 1910 and in later years was home to a number of Pannier Tanks , " Hall " and " Grange " class tender locomotives with a sprinkling of "2800 " class heavy freight engines , and a couple of the massive " 4700 " Mixed Traffic " Night Owls " also found a home there in the mid ' fifties. In June 1954 St . Philip's Marsh received an allocation of Swindon built Stanier Midland Region " 8F's", but this important Depot closed its doors in June of 1964 when its remaining locomotives were moved across to the Midland Region Depot at Barrow Road for just one final year .
