1007 1959-06-25 Penzance
Corner of Long Rock engine shed on extreme right. The only diesel shunter allocated to Penzance at that date was D3514, The shunters wagon has the later pattern of welded angle iron handrails to Dia.M4.
Trevor Tremethick says "This was one of the two Truro-based 'Counties' at the time and the 83F shedcode can be seen. Three months later both this one and 1023 'County of Oxford' were moved to Exeter and that was the end of the Counties at Truro. The shape of the 'standard' double chimney varied between locomotives. 1007 and 1023 were 1957 conversions (I remember them coming out with the new chimneys) and they were easily distinguished from other class members, particularly from the front. As can be seen here, the lip of the chimney was very prominent when compared with other 'Counties' and the chimney as a whole seemed even more squat, although this could be an optical illusion.
1007 was one of two 'Counties' (the other being 1018 'County of Leicester') sent for scrap to Kings of Norwich. Those East Anglian spotters who managed to see them must have wondered at these strange aliens".
