Another long-time Shrewsbury ‘County’ No.1025 County of Radnor in the early 1960s. The box-like appearance of the Hawksworth tenders shows up well. Surprisingly the tenders fitted to the ‘Counties’ were 6 inches wider than those built with the ‘Modified Halls’ and so were not interchangeable. The ‘Counties’ were unique among the GWR named passenger engines in having straight nameplate which were necessary because of the full-length splasher over the wheels, instead of separate splashers for each wheel over which the standard curved nameplates were fitted.
