1019 1960s Wednesbury

1019 1960s Wednesbury

No.1019 County of Merioneth on the ‘Pines Express’ from Manchester to Bournemouth. The’ Pines’ had been re-routed via Shrewsbury, Wellington and Wolverhampton from September 1962. English Electric ‘Type 4s’ brought the train to Wolverhampton and normally handed over to a Stafford Road ‘Castle’ which took it as far as Oxford. No.1019 was at Shrewsbury from October 1962 until withdrawn in February 1963.

Having carried its " County of Merioneth " name from new in 1946 , unlike many of the earlier " Counties " which were not named for some time after they had entered service , 1019 was initially allocated to Penzance , part of an early concentration of the class in the Westcountry .
By mid 1956 their numbers were spread over eight Motive Power Depots , ranging from Penzance and Truro in the far West to Neyland , Shrewsbury and Chester further afield , whilst Bristol Bath Road , Swindon and Laira also had one or more on their respective allocations.
